Abstract

Mpox is a zoonotic disease, endemic to the African continent, which in 2022 spread beyond the borders of Africa, sounding the alarm bells around the world about a possible pandemic caused by this virus. Mpox is caused by a DNA virus of the Poxviridae family, Orthopoxvirus genus, and is a distant relative of the smallpox virus (VACV) that marked the history of humanity with high lethality before the discovery of the vaccine by the bovine variant CPXV. This study aims to describe the behavior of the infection with respect to epidemiology, signs and symptoms, treatment, prevention, and the itinerary of the Mpox virus in the Americas and Brazil.
